Mayors in MP to be indirectly elected: Governor approves Ordinance 2019

Bhopal, October 8, 2019 (Muslim Saleem): The Governor Shri Lalji Tandon has granted approval to the Madhya Pradesh Municipality Amendment Act 2019. The Chief Minister Shri Kamal Nath met the Governor Shri Tandon at Raj Bhavan the last day and elaborated on all the aspects and objectives of the changes made in the ordinance.
As regard to the ongoing talks on the ordinance, the Chief Minister told the Governor that people who have tried to pressurise the Governor by making the ordinance a matter of public discussion is against the dignity of the Raj Bhavan and are their personal views. The Government has nothing to do with these views. He said that in a democracy, it is necessary to adhere to healthy standards. The Chief Minister clarified before the Governor that the state government is committed to the constitutional decency. The Governor Shri Tandon decided to approve the ordinance after being satisfied with the entire circumstances of the discussions by Shri Kamal Nath and the details given regarding the ordinance.
The Governor Shri Tandon firmly believes that commenting on the discretion of constitutional posts is a violation of constitutional norms. The dignity of the Governor’s office is fair and undisputed. Any direct or indirect pressure on it is a violation of constitutional norms. This act is harmful to healthy democratic traditions. It is utmost important that the constitutional office must act impartially and without any pressure for the dignity, fairness and undisputed duty towards democratic traditions.
The Governor Shri Tandon made it clear that the doors of the Raj Bhavan are always open to every citizen. Everyone is being given full opportunity to present his/her case equally. In order to ensure protection to healthy democratic traditions and constitutional norms, it is necessary to adhere to the constitutional decorum in expressing views on any subject.
