Balaghat becomes first district to produce new fish specie Jayanti Rohu

Bhopal, August 23, 2015 (Abdul Ahad Farhan): There is conducive fisheries atmosphere in Balaghat district due to adequate number of rivers, lakes and good rains. As a result, Balaghat is a pioneer district in fish production in the state. The district has added yet another feather to its cap by starting production of new fish specie Jayanti Rohu . Balaghat has become the first district to do so in the state. Fisheries Department is engaged in fish seed production in Balaghat district. This, it is becoming difficult to maintain conducive atmosphere to fish seed production due to below normal rainfall.

Despite this, 15 crore fish seeds have been produced in fish seed zone Murjhad so far.  In year 2013, as many as 1000 Jayanti Rohu fish were brought from Central Fisheries Research Centre, Bhubaneswar. The new breed of fish was bred in Murjhad zone and for the first this season, success was achieved in producing one crore 82 lakh Jayanti Rohu fish seeds. Speciality of Jayanti Rohu is that it grows weight of upto 2.50 kg in a year. It is more nutritious than other species. Breeding of this specie will give more income in less time to fishermen and their living standard will improve.
