Pained by farmers’ sorrow; CM cancels decade function


Bhopal, October 19, 2015 (Ataullah Faizan): Chief Minister Mr. Shivraj Singh Chouhan has cancelled “Decade of Development Function” which was to be held to celebrate completion of 10 years of his Chief Ministership. He has taken this sensitive decision due to crisis faced by farmers in the state. Mr. Chouhan announced this at Antyodaya Mela in Chhindwara district today. Mr. Chouhan has taken a number of important measures to make agricultural a profitable occupation in state. Madhya Pradesh is pioneer in extending relief to farmers in case of natural calamities. Remarkable increase upto 10 times has been made in relief to farmers during last 10 years. Relief upto Rs. 12 thousand crore has been given against losses to crops of pulses, fruits, vegetables and other assistance. First time, frost has been included in natural calamities. Madhya Pradesh is also ahead of all states in giving maximum crop insurance benefit to farmers. For the first time in the history of the state, minimum 10-hour power is being supplied daily for agriculture. Area under irrigation has been increased from 7.5 lakh hectares to 40 lakh hectares.

The Chief Minister has directed to extend maximum relief immediately to farmers whose Kharif crop suffered damage. He said that these arrangements should be undertaken on war-footing. Swinging into action, the Chief Minister directed to provide relief to all drought-affected farmers. He directed to provide crop insurance benefit to farmers at the earliest. It is noteworthy that draft of a new crop insurance scheme in consultation with insurance experts is being made so that farmers can be provided an assured income in case of crop loss.

Kharif crop insurance amount of Rs. 515 crore will be provided to about 4.25 lakh farmers soon. The Chief Minister has also directed to complete survey of crop loss by October 20. directives have been given to field staff to ensure liberal assessment of crop insurance for maximum crop insurance benefit to farmers. Taking another sensitive decision, the Chief Minister directed to suspend loan recovery from affected farmers. Besides, he has taken initiative to extend loans to affected farmers for Rabi crops. Relief works have also been started.
