Centre urged to give Rs. 2400 crore drought relief to MP

jetly27.10.15Bhopal, October 27, 2015 (Abdul Ahad Farhan):    Finance Minister Mr. Jayant Malaiya and Agriculture Minister Mr. Gaurishankar Bisen met Union Finance Minister Mr. Arun Jaitley in New Delhi today and apprised him of situation of severe drought due to deficient rains in the state. They informed the Union Minister that the state has been grappling with natural calamities and drought for last 3-4 years. Due to it, crop production has declined considerably. Farmers have also suffered financial loss. The Ministers urged that Central government should send a study team at the earliest to assess crop loss in the state. The Ministers urged for Rs. 2400 crore drought relief as per preliminary assessments. He said that as per initial estimates, 228 tahasils of about 35 districts in the state have been hit by drought affecting about 48 lakh farmers and 44.17 lakh hectare land.

The state government has distributed relief worth Rs. 370 crore from its resources. The Ministers informed that number of farmers suffering over 33 percent crop loss is about 30 lakh. For relief to them, Rs. 1440 crore was demanded from the Centre. Similarly, Rs. 300 was urged for drinking water and additional relief of Rs. 750 crore to provide short-term loans at zero percent interest to farmers. Union Finance Minister Mr. Jaitley gave a patient hearing to Ministers Duo and assured to send a study team soon to assess crop loss in view of gravity of the situation.
