MEERUT: Mohammed Nadeem, a resident of Qureshiyan Colony in Inchauli, had not forgiven his sister Shabnam for marrying against his wishes. On Thursday, after offering Eid prayers, Nadeem set out on his motorcycle and shot at his sister for “rebelling” against the family. As luck would have it, Shabnam was wearing a locket which foiled her brother’s plan to gun her down. The bullet ricocheted off the locket and Shabnam was unharmed. She later went to the police station and told the police about the attack on her.
“The woman had recently married a man named Anees against the wishes of her family. Her brother was enraged by the marriage and allegedly shot at her on the morning of Eid. He aimed at her chest. She was wearing a locket at the time, so the bullet hit the locket instead of piercing her. This was a lucky escape for her. If the locket wasn’t where it was, the consequences could have been very different. She was a little hurt but after she came to the police station, we took her to the hospital. Doctors said that she is not in a critical condition,” said Yogender Malik, station officer at Inchauli police station.
He added, “We have not yet received a formal complaint, although we expect to get one soon. Our first priority was to ensure that Shabnam was unharmed. Once she is back in the police station, we will ask her to file a formal police complaint. An FIR will be registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the accused will be arrested.”
