If you have had enough of Indian Yoga Guru Ramdev, on the occasion of International Yoga Day, we introduce you to Pakistani Yoga Guru, Shamshad Haider. His organisation teaches yoga to over 10,000 students in Islamabad, Karachi, Rawalpindi and Lahore and his students include Pakistani politicians such as Qaim Ali Shah and Ghulam Mustafa Khar.
Popularly known as Yogi Haider, he aspires to take yoga to each and every household of Pakistan. Well, same like Ramdev, he belongs from Patanjali School of Yoga, and unlike him, he likes to keep his hands off socio-political topics.
Yogi Haider is based out of Pakistan’s Punjab Province, has been working on spreading the art of yoga throughout Pakistan for more than two decades now and he runs a programme called Yoga Pakistan under which he provides free (public) and paid (private) yoga training.
It was in the year 1994 that he started his spiritual journey into exploring the science of Yoga. He travelled through India, Tibet, Nepal and Burma on his quest to thoroughly study the art of yoga.
He took meditation lessons from the most acclaimed meditation guru, Satya Narayan Goenka. He met his wife Shumaila, who was his student once, and helped her overcome asthma. Now she also teaches yoga with her husband.
For spreading the message of Yoga in a conservative country like Pakistan, he has centered his approach on the health benefits of Yoga instead of aligning it with any specific religion. He even claims that the Yoga was originated in Pakistan’s Multan area.
